Sew Pony Vintage – Tic Tac Toe Dress (Click on the link to purchase the pattern!!!)
Fabric Dress 2 – Vlisco Wax Hollandais – 100% Cotton – 2067
I was lucky enough to be chosen to pattern test Sew Pony Vintage’s new girls dress – the Tic Tac Toe Dress.
It comes with heaps of options too!! Piping, pockets, bodice lining, 4 different sleeve options, a half peter pan collar, full peter pan collar, back tie...there are just so many combinations, it’s just fantastic!
I decided to sew up the dress with the half collar, back tie and rectangular sleeves in size 3.
With my brother’s wedding coming up in February I thought this would be the perfect dress to make my daughter and it lives up to all expectations!
It did how ever come with a few challenges for me. I had never made or sewn piping, I had never sewn in a bodice lining, I had not sewn a peter pan collar since I was in studying garment construction 10 years ago and invisible zips usually hate me. So with all that to look forward to I dived in and yes I was actually looking forward to learning some new skills and refining and remembering some old ones!
The pattern and instructions are awesome, there are photo’s to help you along the way and each instruction is clear and precise.
The piping was easy to make, there is a little tutorial in the back of the pattern to show you how to make it so I had a go. I used gold bias binding and I think it looks awesome and it was easy to insert into the dress.
There were a few things that have changed since the pattern test that are shown on my photo’s.
The half peter pan collar doesn’t meet at the middle on Miss A’s dress. This pattern piece has been changed and now it does.
The sleeves I chose were the rectangle sleeves. As you can see by the photo’s they came out quite gathered. Again, the pattern has been amended but I actually love the way they came out!
As I said earlier I had not sewn a lining in a dress before and I was a little apprehensive but it was actually easy and the finish is beautiful!
Oh invisible zips....I have sewn enough of these to know better I had to sew this one in twice before getting it right. I always over think these and have a total brain fart at the same time if that’s possible! Anyway, it’s neat now and it closes ha ha!
So with all that, the dress was complete and I was in love. I couldn’t wait to try to sew this dress again once the pattern was released after the testing was complete.
The second dress I made using the released pattern was so easy to make. All the instructions were fresh in my mind which meant I made it in about half the time of the first. Plus I constructed quite a simple version with no sleeves or back tie.
The zip still took two goes, I honestly don’t know what is wrong with me, I think there is some invisible zip insertion curse on me!!
This sweet vintage inspired pattern is beautiful and I love how special it is. My little girl loves it as much as I do. I am hiding the first one I made until my brothers wedding but the second one I made out of the Vlisco Wax Hollandais is an instant favourite of hers and I am sure she will get lot's of wear out of it this summer.
