Pattern: Megan Nielsen – Matilda Pattern Testing
Main - 100% Black Rayon
Details - Cotton + Steel Birch Floral 100% Rayon
When I was accepted to pattern test the new Matilda Dress by Megan Nielsen I was pretty excited.
This pattern has so many great details and thought it would be a great challenge to make. Pattern Testing is a great way to build skills as extra attention to detail is required in case there is a glitch in the pattern or instructions aren’t clearly laid out. With that in mind I put my sewing game face on and started on the Matilda dress.
I said, the Matilda Dress has so many great features and skill building techniques it was a great way to polish some sewing techniques I haven’t used for a while. Some of my favourite, so not to name them all are the statement skirt pockets, the topstitching making everything looking very professional and polished, the gorgeous rounded colour and drop sleeves with sleeve bands. I could keep going but there really is just too many beautiful features in the pattern you should really try it for yourself!
I chose to make my in a rayon. I’m still not convinced on my fabric choice, I like the drape of the rayon and the way the black with the contrast colour sleeves and pocket fabric add a touch of elegance to this dress but I am not sure of its practicality. And as in practicality I mean I’m sure when I would wear this dress...if I had used a cotton or even a medium weight denim for this I think that it’s functionality would be much better suited to my wardrobe as it would be quite versatile.
Saying that though, it means I can save this one for a special occasion and of course make another one with a more casual day to day vibe.
I really appreciate this pattern and all its features. It really needs to be given love and respect in its construction to show the finer details and beauty.
